Or you can spend 4000$ more and get one in proper condition...

Is $13,000 book on these things? From my experience in the car sales game is that $500-1000 below book is okay. Any cheaper should raise some flags.

Not to pick on you, but I'll never understand that line of reasoning,
$4000 more is nearly 50% more. That's like saying why buy a Fiesta ST when you could spend another $10,000 and get an STi

My thoughts exactly. The car is about $4,000 cheaper than it should be. It is either a bargain because of some very minor defects that are more than worth the $4k price drop. OR..... OR..... It has some other serious flaw which would make it a no-go at any price. Figuring out which of the two options it happens to be can be quite a gamble. Although I must say I love the idea of dropping $9k and driving away in an amazing track ready sports car.

YES, I'd love to pick up a rough one and turn it into a track rat.

Yes but we are talking about the same model of car here... This car was obviously not taken care of AT ALL. It's also probably the same mechanically. Spending 4000$ more for a one in proper condition is much smarter than having to fix shit up constantly because you bought a dead car.

yes you can get decent ones for that kind of price... Book is usually a bit more probably 15 or 16000$

Well considering the condition of the seat and the huge scrape on the side and the paint peeling on the door.....CP. Avoid it. Unless you have the money to make it right.

You should replace the seat regardless of what model you buy and a little rough bodywork is no big deal. You'd have to know it's in bad shape otherwise based on what we have to go on I'd say NP.

Ever owned a complete piece of shit that was falling apart at the seems on a daily basis?
I have, and it's less than fun. It's completely not fun at all, actually. At first you think you can keep up. A regulator motor here, a broken weather seal there, no big deal, one weekend spent tinkering with the car, easy right? Yeah, 'til you run into something that takes waaay more time and energy it is worth to fix, but HAS to get done if you want to drive the car anymore (for me, this was the broken signal stalk that required the complete removal of the airbag, steering wheel, dissassembly of the steering column, and damn near REMOVAL OF THE WHOLE FUCKIN' DASH 8 hours of my life I'm never fucking getting back) and the problems start to snowball from there into territory that is beyond your shadetree mechanic skills and your limited time/energy/pocket book, until they take the car out and you with it.
This is why I don't at all question why people will pay a massive premium for a low mileage cherry example car over a much cheaper and much more run down model. There is no free lunch and you get what you pay for. You can invest in a car with a lot of life left in it now, or save a few bucks and get nickel and dimed to death in the future.

I have a friend who drives one of these nearly every day. Has 200k miles on it, and is extremely well babied. This is not a bad price, as most corvette owners take the cars to the dealer for everything, so you know the work is done right.
NP.

Sort of. '98 (and probably '97) is kind of known as the least desirable year of the LS1s. Improved rod bolts, PCM changes, etc came later.

Concerns as always w/ used sports cars (esp. vette).
-Fiberglass = not cheap fix to fix
-What does "new Clutch" entail?
-Some body panels appear to not be lined up correctly.

That's all fine and dandy. My issue is when people say 'instead of buying that, spend 150% more and buy something else'. If it was 'instead of buying that basketcase, by X car for the same amount of money or 10% more, it's in better shape' I wouldn't take issue with it.

If you had said 'you'd be better off avoiding that and saving up some more cash to get a better one', that's fine.

CP, but I'd have to see it in person. The door edge, he opened it too fast and hit something. The bottom, he probably wasn't used to such a low car or he had to go off an unavoidable curb. The seat, whatever. The only things that I don't like are the driver's side headlight, (it pops up too much, and those flip-ups are a pain to replace), the lack of mileage statement, and it looks like a chunk of body is missing from the driver's side rear wheel well. Also is the rear bumper a different color than the rest of the body?

Well, spend 4000$ more for one in better shape, pretty much means the same thing :)

Eh, I'm getting more and more concerned about the body. The gaps on the front look fucked up and there's a chunk missing on the left in front of the wheel. It may have had a bumper replaced from a small accident.
Our shop can do all mechanicals, but we don't do bodywork. All I can do is buy panels and bolt them on.
People buy ratty Mustangs, ratty Bimmers, ratty Miatas all the time, but I'm not sure too many people buy ratty Corvettes. Normally it's old men buyers, not greased-up 22 year olds.

Damage to the lower rockers isn't repairable outside shady shit (body filler) and they are a BIATCH to take off and put new ones on (glued). This either skipped up over a curb or got ditched. Better options out there.
